Top 10 SEO Mistakes and What to Do to Correct It
Search engine optimization (SEO) is a set of methods aimed at improving the ranking of a website in search engine listings. (Wikipedia)
This definition of SEO sounds simple, but beware! Search engine optimization is a minefield, even for professionals, and although necessary to a business, should not be undertaken lightly. Below, is a brief look at the top 10 mistakes and how to correct them.
1. Non-Relevant Linkage.
External links to your site play a large part in most of the major search engine algorithms and can be considered an endorsement of your site. But if you are being linked to from sites that have no relevance to your content, then that is now considered a negative endorsement and will not raise your ranking in the search engines. Ensure all links to your pages are from relevant sites. Be wary of link builders who acquire links from gambling, pharmaceutical or adult themed sites, especially if your site is not of the same theme. Link building is as much a science as it is an art, one we take very seriously.
2. Untargeted Keywords.
The people who use search engines are 'normal' people who are not likely to use words used in advertising brochures. Get to know how your customers ask for your services/products and use these in your content. Often times, actual keyword research will surprise you.
3. Excessive Graphics and Flash Content.
This looks good on a web page, but to search engine crawlers it means little. Search engines are looking for content, keywords, and relevancy to the search terms. By all means have some graphics, but don't forget the meat. This doesn't mean Flash designed websites are bad necessarily. In fact, some big businesses do use it. For most webmasters though, Flash sites are best avoided. Unless your Flash designer does high-end websites and knows how to integrate the content and keywords within the Flash, hybrid sites combining Flash headers with HTML content will be a good option.
4. Believing all search engines are the same.
What pleases Yahoo might not necessarily please MSN or Google. Optimize your content, keywords, inbound links, and internal linking structure so that there is something for at least one of the three top search engines.
5. Multiple Search Engine Submissions.
In the very early days of search engines, this technique may have had some success, but now it can lead to slower indexing and rankings. A site with inbound links from other sites will get indexed naturally and search engine submission is not necessary. In fact, multiple submissions may be construed as an attempt to spam the search engines. The top 5 engines account for more than 90% of all activity so it is wise not to ruin your chances of ranking naturally in the search results. (comScore Media Metrix qSearch data, August 2005)
6. Incorrect Use of Title Tags.
Most people consider the title to be for their company name or product. Not so. You must include your most important search phrases within your title tag and if you do want your company name there, keep it for the end. Keep the title tag to less than 65 characters long to avoid the appearance of title tag keyword-stuffing.
7. Use of 'Black Hat' techniques.
Techniques such as doorway pages, hidden text, and overstuffing keywords may have had success in the past but now they will earn you penalties and could even get you banned. Avoid them altogether if you are seeking long term success. Some black hat techniques can work on a short term basis, but in the long run prove very costly.
8. Expecting Immediate Results.
SEO is an ongoing process and should be treated as such by your SEO company. Good optimization will involve building good links with quality sites and this takes time.
9. Use of Unethical SEO Consultants.
Beware the consultant that guarantees rankings with no past clients to back it up with or claims of special relationships with search engines. Many such "consultants" or "experts" will probably take your money and run. Choose a reputable SEO consultant, one who will keep in regular contact with progress reports and updates.
10. Decide to do optimization in-house.
Probably possible in the past, but now with ever increasing sophistication of search engine algorithms, this is an area best left to an expert. Furthermore, the good SEO experts usually have other income streams from their online marketing activities and a regular paycheck to work full-time simply doesn't justify their time invested. We've yet to meet a good SEO who doesn't have virtual real estate bringing in a nice chunk of cash.

The Lion and The Mouse - Must Read !!
One day a Lion lay asleep in the jungle. A tiny Mouse, running about in the grass and not noticing where he was going, ran over the Lion's head and down his nose.
The Lion awoke with a loud roar, and down came his paw over the little Mouse. The great beast was about to open his huge jaws to swallow the tiny creature when "Pardon me, O King, I beg of you," cried the frightened Mouse. "If you will only forgive me this time, I shall never forget your kindness. I meant no harm and I certainly didn't want to disturb Your Majesty. If you will spare my life, perhaps I may be able to do you a good turn, too."
The Lion began to laugh, and he laughed and laughed. "How could a tiny creature like you ever do anything to help me? And he shook with laughter.
"Oh well," he shrugged, looking down at the frightened Mouse, "you're not so much of a meal anyway." He took his paw off the poor little prisoner and the Mouse quickly scampered away.
Some time after this, some hunters, trying to capture the Lion alive so they could carry him to their king, set up rope nets in the jungle. The Lion, who was hunting for some food, fell into the trap. Her roared and thrashed about trying to free himself but with every move he made, the ropes bound him tighter.
The unhappy Lion feared he could never escape, and her roared pitifully. His thunderous bellows echoed through the jungle.The tiny Mouse, scurrying about far away, heard the Lion's roars. "That may be there very Lion who once freed me," he said, remembering his promise. And he ran to see whether he could help.
Discovering the sad state the Lion was in, the Mouse said to him, "Stop, stop! You must not roar. If you make so much noise, the hunters will come and capture you . I'll get you out of this trap."
With his sharp little teeth the Mouse gnawed at the ropes until they broke. When the Lion had stepped out of the net and was free once more, the Mouse said, "Now, was I not right?"
"Thank you, good Mouse," said the Lion gently. "You did help me even though I am big and you are so little. I see now that kindness is always worth while."
Moral of the story: Even the strong sometimes need the friendship of the weak.

Do you KNOW “2 Powerful Words”
“I will.” Those two words boldly declare power, determination and vigor. “I will.” Those two words describe strength and decision.
“I will” shouts victory loud enough to drown out the cries of difficulty. “I will” overpowers discouragement with accomplishment.
“I will” is mastery over adversity. “I will” conquers complications, annihilates dilemmas, and sweeps away obstacles. Those two little words, “I will,” resonate power.
And the opposite, as you might well imagine, are the two words “I cannot.” Those two words timidly speak of lack, indecision, and weakness. “I cannot” only sees difficulty and can never see victory.
“I cannot” is discouragement with no possible accomplishment. “I cannot” is mastery over nothing but failure. “I cannot” is drowning in dilemmas and obstacles and sees no way out.
In your vocabulary, do you say, “I will,” or do you say, “I cannot?”
Take care to not confuse “I will” with “I can.” They are not the same, and are often in fact very far apart. For example, if you wait until you think you can accomplish something, you will not get it done. In fact, you will never even start.
There are many who have the ability to accomplish great things but never get around to saying, “I will.” You might be the greatest carpenter that ever lived and have the finest tools on the market. It may be impressive to others for you to say, “You name it and I can build it!” However, you will never build a single thing until you say, “I will build!”
What, then, if you have no ability as a carpenter but possess a great desire to build? You will set your own course by saying either “I cannot build,” or “I will learn.” “I cannot” simply says that there is no way, while, “I will” emphatically declares that there is a way and you will find it.
Once again, it becomes so clear and obvious: that which comes out of your mouth is an excellent indicator of what’s going on inside your mind. What so many people don’t realize about this is that every time you make a statement, you hear it, and it augments and fortifies it in your mind.
“I will” or “I cannot” – they each determine the path you have chosen to travel. They indicate your choice for failure or defeat.
But what about, “I’ll try?” Doesn’t that indicate some persistence and positive direction? No, it doesn’t. “I’ll try” is simply “I cannot” in disguise. Even the phrase “I’m going to try really, really hard” stills lacks a decisive commitment to success and victory.
Suppose you’ve always wanted to run in a marathon. You can say, “I think I’ll try to get in shape for the marathon.” You might even say, “I’m really going to try to get into shape and be ready for the upcoming marathon.” Those phrases may sound nice and noble, but they leave the door wide open to quit and give up, do they not?
On the other hand, when you state emphatically, “I will get into shape and I will run in the upcoming marathon,” you have clearly stated your intentions and there are no options. You have made a commitment. “I will!” Do you see the difference? It genuinely is a significant difference.
God never made a failure, so don’t accept failure by saying, “I cannot.” Don’t leave the door wide open to quit by saying, “I’ll try.” With God’s help you don’t need to settle for “try.”
Decide and determine that you will, and He will help you. He will guide you. He will direct your paths. Decide that you will and He will be there with you every single step of the way.

How To Recognise Depression
Mental health, not the sort of thing most people choose to talk about seriously. We’ve all heard the comments about ‘Sad Sack’, ‘Mr Grumpy’ or phrases like ‘Smile, I’ll pay for the stitches’ or ‘Stop moping around’. It saddens me every time I hear a remark like that, something insensitive or said out of plain ignorance, usually by people who have little or no contact with people who suffer from depression, and most certainly do not have a loved one or family member that suffers from depression or any other mental disorder, that can so easy get a tight grip on a sufferers life. It’s almost tabboo if you think about it.
Suffering from depression or mental health problems, is something that most people feel ashamed to admit. Who wouldn’t, with comments like those above aimed right at you. If you have suffered from major depression or have had an episode of depression that has contributed significantly to a change in your daily life, facing up to comments like those above is something that you will have to accecpt sooner or later.
What about those people who don’t suffer a major depression or severe episode, whether life-threatening or not? Those of us who definately don’t have depression and definately don’t need to see a shrink to confirm what we already know: that we are not depressed! This brings me to the core of this article: How do you recognise depression?
It is so very important to be vigilant. To be aware of the warning signs, and the earlier they are spotted, the better. Why? Because being depressed leads to behaviour that is not helpful. Behaviour that over time, is reinforced day after day, month after month. Slowly but surely getting a firm grip on your life. It is much harder to spot a change in behaviour if it occurs and develops gradually over time. But what are these signs and behaviour that we should look out for?
The most common symptom of depression and one which most people think is the only one is having a persistant empty or ’sad’ mood. This is not what can sometimes be reffered to as feeling ‘down in the dumps’. The mood will last from several weeks at least. At which point you should see a psychiatrist or doctor. A feeling of pessimism, hopelessness or helplessness and being critical of oneself for never being good enough at anything no matter what we do. Depression can lead to a lack of interest in persuits someone usually enjoys. Feeling lethargic or having no enegry or drive, even for sex, is another symptom of depression that can slowly be re-enforced over time. Trouble with sleeping and eating is a symptom that most people would not usually associate with depression. Sleeping disorders are often dismissed as having developed a mild case of insomnia that will surely go away over time. Some people wake early in the morning and are unable to fall back asleep. Eating disturbances to, especially in women, can hide the depression, because the first thing that will come to mind is anorexia or bulimia. This is true, but we also need to place these symptoms in context, which is why it is so important to know the facts and symptoms of depression so that we can see the bigger picture.
Depression often goes hand in hand with anxiety. Anxiety can also cause sleeping disturbances, as well as a feeling of dread, increased heart rate and more severely, panic attacks. Depression and anxiety can easily knock our confidence levels as both can lead to difficulty concerntrating and remembering or making decisions. These symptoms can climax with devistating effect. Within the workplace they can lead to a complete nervous breakdown where the person no longer knows, or can’t remember how to do their job or how they even got there. Nothing makes sense and it can be very frightening when you are faced with a situation like this where you no longer know what is happening around you, or much less, why you are feeling this way. Depression can also manifest itself through persistent physical symptoms or pains that do not seem to respond to treatment. Irritable and losing ones temper are also symptoms of deppression, seen more often in males than females. Thoughts of suicide, attempts and plans are never to be taken lightly. Often, suicide attempts are a cry for help. Sometimes they are not.
A person can be diagnosed with depression if four or more of the symptoms above have been present in a two week period or more. Not everyone will have the same symptoms so it is important to be aware and look for signs of all symptoms of depression. Remember, only a doctor or psychiatrist can diagnose depression.
